Back to school can bring excitement - new teachers, new friends, new school supplies and even new classrooms. There is nothing like the first days of school. The energy in the air is palpable and contagious. As an educator, I love it and get more and more excited as the days get closer.

However, I also know that sometimes the start of school can bring some stress and concerns. The school environment demands many things that summer activities don’t — the ability to sit still; get organized; stay on task; and adapt to a new, highly structured daily schedule. School also requires students to separate from their parents, which can be challenging, especially for our youngest learners.

To help, here are some helpful tips for both new and returning families:

  • Use a calendar. There are a lot of events and schedules to keep track of, a spiral calendar or one on your phone / computer will help tremendously.

  • Start bedtime routines early. Do not wait to get back into school rhythm. Start the routines a few days early and it will make the first days go well.

  • Back-to-school shopping. Order uniforms now at Dennis Uniform. Saint Mark's includes school supplies in tuition, so all you need to do is grab that great looking backpack!

  • Find a 'go-to-school friend'. For new families, attending Orientation on August 16th will be key. Also plan to come to our Back to School Picnic on Friday, August 26th

  • Talk about homework. When, where, and for how long. Students should not be tackling homework all evening. Set aside a reasonable amount of time and communicate with teachers if you do not finish.

  • Deal with expectations. Talk to your child about what they can expect, where to find help if they need it, and generally about how they are feeling about school.

  • Show that you are thinking about them. Send your child notes in the bag or lunch boxes or via text to let them know how much you love and care for them.

Remember, you don’t have to wait until the first day of class to ask for help. We are here to address any concerns you might have, including the specific needs of your child.

Our teachers, administrators and maintenance staff are busy planning and preparing too! These tips will help your family start  the new school year on the right foot. We can’t wait to have our campus filled with smiling, energized students.  Enjoy the last few days of summer - see you again soon!
