The St. Mark’s Theatre Department proudly presents one musical each spring. Professional backdrops, lighting, individual body microphones, costuming, sets, a professional dance instructor, and a live pit orchestra give students and parents in the audience the feeling of being part of a real Broadway show.
An elementary feeder-school performance, four paid performances, and double casting of lead roles give many students the opportunity to be stars onstage. Students in the 3rd -8th grades may audition for the show. Rehearsals take place after school and on weekends. All performances take place at St. Mark’s, where the gymnasium is transformed into a theater.
Students can also apply to be part of the technical or artistic crew to work behind-the-scenes if they choose. The crew creates/paints sets, runs the lighting, helps backstage during all performances and much more! All crewmembers are an essential part of the success of the annual musical.
Each year at St. Mark’s there is an abundance of children who try out for the annual musical. Last year’s “The Little Mermaid” included over 70 St. Mark’s students and teachers working together to put on a fabulous show!
Past musical productions have included Oliver, The Music Man, Into the Woods, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, Bye Bye Birdie, Shrek the Musical, and most recently The Little Mermaid.
Each summer, students can participate in a summer musical through the St. Mark’s Summer Camp. In just two short weeks, campers put together a junior version of a musical. While the show is scaled down from the Annual Musical, costumes, sets and microphones are an essential part of the experience. Campers design and paint sets, as well as playing parts in the show.
St. Mark’s Theatre Department is pleased to present Mary Poppins for the spring of 2018!
Mary Poppins is the story of the Banks family who lives in a big house in London on Cherry Tree Lane. Things are not going well for the family. The children, Jane and Michael, are out of control and are in need of a new nanny. Jane and Michael have their own ideas about what sort of caretaker they should have, while their parents – and in particular, Mr. Banks – are insistent on someone strict for the job. When a mysterious young woman named Mary Poppins appears at their doorstep, the family finds that she’s the answer to their prayers, but in the most peculiar way. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises, “Anything can happen if you let it.”
Auditions for Mary Poppins are happening soon (Saturday, December 9th)! For everything you need to know, please click HERE.
