Students in 4th grade begin their experience on band instruments. Each child is given the opportunity to try all instruments — flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, percussion — and is assigned one based on proficiency and desire. By then end of one semester, students are featured in our end-of-term concert.
In 5th and 6th grade, students must choose to study band or choir as their major music electives. Those in band continue to develop skills and perform in concerts Additional instruments are offered, including oboe, bassoon, tenor and baritone saxophone, and tuba.
The 7th and 8th grade students who have studied a band instrument for at least one year and have a passion for playing their instrument join the Advanced Band. Many of have studied their instrument for two to three years. The band performs at Episcopal School Sunday, Advent Chapel, Solo and Ensemble Festival, the Florida Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessment and the St. Mark’s Spring Band Concert.
St. Mark’s has the distinction of having the only middle school steel band in the area. Students in grades 3-8 may participate through the afterschool program. They rehearse weekly and are featured in concerts throughout the year.
Students in grades 6-8 can join The Flutelettes, the only flute choir in the area. The Flutelettes rehearse weekly and are featured in concerts at St. Mark’s and in the greater community.
Private instrumental music lessons are available after school for piano, violin, guitar, and all band instruments. Expert professionals teach from beginners to advanced musicians.
