Students in 5th and 6th grade Beginning Band are given the opportunity through an “Instrument Fitting” provided by All County Music, to try each band instrument including the flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. Each student is assigned one instrument based on how well they “fit” with that instrument. Fit is determined by how much immediate success the student has when trying the instrument for the first time. A better fit leads to faster progress! Beginning Band students perform in December for a Christmas Mass as well as at the annual PRISM concert in May.
Students in 6th grade who have already completed a year of Beginning Band have the opportunity to expand their musical knowledge in Intermediate Band. Students in Intermediate Band take their playing skills and musicianship to the next level through audio recordings, video tutorials, and performing solos and ensembles at the annual Florida Bandmaster’s Association Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment. Intermediate Band students perform in December for a Christmas Mass as well as at the annual PRISM concert in May.
Students in 7th and 8th grade who have already completed a minimum of one year as a band student are allowed to perform with the Advanced Band. Advanced Band students hone the necessary skills to prepare for band at the high school level through multiple community performances including Episcopal School Sunday, Advent Lessons and Carols, the Florida Bandmaster’s Association Concert Band Music Performance Assessment, and the annual PRISM concert at St. Mark’s. The 2016-17 Advanced Band received superior (A+) ratings at their assessment!
Students in 7th and 8th grade are given the option to enroll in General Music. This class is non-performance based and provides a music education through hands-on projects and group learning. Students learn basic music terms, how to compose music using digital software, music history, music production, and about careers in music.
St. Mark’s has the distinction of having the only middle school steel band in the area. Students in grades 3-8 may participate through the afterschool program. They rehearse weekly and are featured in concerts throughout the year.
Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade with a minimum of one year of flute playing experience are allowed to join the Flutelettes. The Flutelettes are the only middle school flute choir that exists in South Florida. They perform annually at Christmas on Las Olas. The group also performs Christmas carols annually for the Broward Children’s Center. The Flutelettes meet 3 days per week at 7:30am where they receive specialized instruction from Mrs. Andris, a professional flutist.
Private instrumental music lessons are available after school for piano, violin, guitar, voice, and all band instruments. Expert professionals teach from beginners to advanced musicians.
