The St. Mark’s arts programs are structured to lead students toward identifying and developing their artistic, musical, dramatic, and physical talents and connecting them their  thinking, movement, and aspirations. All the while, students foster creative expression and a greater sense of self-confidence.

Students at each grade level build critical thinking skills through proficiency and analysis of their art. They develop an understanding of basic elements and principles. Additionally, the arts program introduces students to opportunities available in the communities of Oakland Park and Fort Lauderdale.

The study of the arts leads students to meaningfulness in a significant lifelong pursuit of excellence while providing a window to oneself, culture, humanity, community, and spirituality.

Students in the visual arts can exhibit their work at the School and at regional and national venues. The Diocesan Festival, which takes place at Episcopal schools annually, provides an additional opportunity to display achievements in music and dance, visual, and theatre.

The music program has a long history of providing an excellent foundation for our students, which begins with our youngest students. In addition to weekly classes, students in grades 1 and 2 may sign up for Cub Choir, and grades 3 and 4 may sign up for Jr. Singing Lions. These extracurricular choirs perform at events throughout the year.

Our Lower School music curriculum focuses on solfiege, singing, rhythm reading and movement. Our second graders can learn piano skills while third graders explore the recorder and percussion instruments. By fourth grade, students have their first opportunity to play a band instrument.

The Middle School music program is a performance-based program offering music literacy, theory, and history through instrumental and vocal performance. All students are allowed to register for either vocal or instrumental music. Vocal performance is divided into two sections.

Fifth and sixth grade students can join the Jr. Chorus, and seventh and eighth graders can become members of the Singing Lions. Students may also audition for our Chamber Choir, our elite vocal ensemble. The instrumental music program includes Fifth Grade Band, Sixth Grade Band, Advanced Band and Marching Band.

The Advanced Chorus, Chamber Choir, and Advanced Band perform at several events throughout the year including Episcopal School Sunday; Advent Chapel; Concert Band/Choir Festival; Solo and Ensemble Festival, and Spring Concerts.

Each year St. Mark’s produces a musical with auditions open to grades three through eight. Past musicals include Annie, The Music Man, Bye Bye Birdie, Oliver, Beauty and the Beast, and Peter Pan.
