It has been an extremely successful month in the music department. Not only was The Little Mermaid a resounding success, but the Singing Lions and Advanced Band each attended their County Music Performance Assessments and came back with high accolades.

On Wednesday, March 22nd, Mrs. Cowley and Singing Lions including members of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade choir, performed three prepared pieces for three adjudicators at the Florida Vocal Association Middle School Music Performance Assessment. After performing those pieces, they had to read music that they had never seen before, unaccompanied. On their prepared pieces, they received Excellent ratings from two of the judges and a Superior rating from the third. They also received a Superior rating in sight reading on the unprepared music. Their overall rating was Excellent!

On Wednesday, March 29th, the Advanced Band, under the direction of Mrs. Jessey Andris, took the stage at Dillard High School for the Florida Bandmaster’s Association Middle School Music Performance Assessment. The band has been working diligently for months to prepare three musical selections which were performed for three adjudicators. When finished with their stage performance they moved to a clinic room where they performed two pieces that they have never seen before for the sight reading judge. After sight reading was complete, the sight reading judge and clinician worked with them on their prepared pieces.

Mrs. Andris and the band left the assessment with the highest possible rating of Superior. This is no easy task as only a handful of bands in the county go away with that rating. Comments from the judges included what great teaching is happening at St. Mark’s and that the band played both musically and accurately with great tone and overall sound.

Congratulations Mrs. Cowley and The Singing Lions and Mrs. Andris and the Advanced Band for their amazing work!
